Electronic Waybills for River Freight Launching in 2027
Significant updates are on the horizon for the river freight transport system in Russia. The Ministry of Transport has revealed plans to implement electronic waybills aimed at streamlining and automating operations. A pilot phase of this initiative is set for 2026, with full deployment scheduled for 2027. This announcement was made by Transport Minister Andrei Nikitin during a meeting with the President of Russia. Currently, tracking cargo on river routes largely relies on manual processes, which creates inaccuracies in data reporting. Specifically, freight information is recorded in dedicated logs based on verbal instructions from ship captains, resulting in a lack of transparency in the system. The shift to electronic waybills is expected to improve record-keeping and provide a clearer understanding of economic performance in this sector. The new system is designed to enhance the efficiency of freight transport while reducing the possibility of errors associated with human involvement. The Ministry of Transport believes this move will foster the growth of domestic water transport, making it more competitive against other freight transportation methods.
