FedEx revitalizes cargo operations while retiring older models
In a move reflecting its commitment to operational excellence, FedEx Corp. has brought four McDonnell Douglas MD-11 cargo jets back into service, following the recent clearance from aviation authorities. This reinstatement comes precisely seven weeks after restrictions on this aircraft model were lifted. However, alongside this revival, the logistics giant has also announced the retirement of five MD-11 aircraft last quarter, with plans to have its entire fleet available for the peak season, as confirmed by company executives on Tuesday. During its fourth fiscal quarter ending May 31, FedEx incurred a $23 million expense to account for the decommissioning of ten older planes, which prominently included five MD-11 freighters. Additionally, the company has retired four Boeing 757-200 narrowbody freighters and one Airbus A300-600, indicating an overarching strategy of fleet modernization and efficiency. In line with this fleet renewal approach, FedEx successfully took delivery of seven Boeing 767-300 freighters during the fiscal year, resulting in a net reduction of three aircraft from the previous year. These strategic decisions reflect FedEx's ongoing efforts to maintain a modern and capable fleet that meets the evolving demands of the logistics market.
