Slump in Truckload Volumes Noted for May
In a surprising development, truckload volumes took a notable dip in May, even as spot rates made upward strides. The latest report from DAT Freight and Analytics highlights a discordance in market trends, signaling challenges in the freight sector.
The Truckload Volume Index, which measures the quantity of loads scheduled for pickup within the month, reflects fluctuations in shipping activity. This index is regularly adjusted to incorporate new data without compromising its integrity, maintaining a baseline of 100 for loads transported in January 2015. The Van index, for instance, registered at 233, marking a decline of 9% from April and a drop of 8.3% year-over-year.
Moreover, the reefer index also faced setbacks, decreasing by 10% since April, landing at 172—15.7% lower than in the previous year. This decline across various truck types signals complexities in logistics, necessitating a closer examination of market dynamics as companies strive to navigate the shifting landscape of freight transportation.
