The tracking number — is the main code of the postal shipment. It shows acceptance, sorting, transfer between cities, and arrival at the post office. When the number is lost, online tracking almost always hits a wall: the service needs an exact identifier, not just a last name or address.
But this is not a dead end. Most often, the task is not to see the route immediately, but to recover the number. It can be found on the receipt, in the personal account, in the email from the store, in an SMS, push notification, or from the person who sent the box to the post office. If the package has already arrived, the post office sometimes helps to check the receipt by passport and address.

Where to look for the tracking number first
Before going to the post office, check all the places where the code might have been saved. It’s faster than standing at the window and explaining the situation to the operator with gestures.
Most often, the tracking number is found here:
-
on the paper receipt after sending;
-
on the electronic receipt;
-
in the personal account of the online store;
-
in the email after placing the order;
-
in an SMS or push notification;
-
in correspondence with the seller or sender;
-
in a photo of the box;
-
in the Russian Post application.
Do not confuse the order number and the postal tracking number. The order number is needed by the store, while the tracking number is needed for logistics. The postal code usually looks like a long string of numbers or a combination of letters and numbers, especially for international shipments.
Can you track a package without a tracking number by last name
The request “track a package without a tracking number” usually boils down to a simple question: can you enter a last name and see the path of the box. In open search — no. The last name does not replace the tracking number because there are many identical full names, addresses may partially match, and some shipments do not show a detailed route without a code.
The last name helps when the package is already at the post office. The operator can check the received shipments by passport, address, index, or notification. This is not full tracking, but a check on the spot. It is useful if the delivery time has already passed, and the paper was not dropped in the mailbox or was lost.
Bring your passport. If the shipment is registered to another person, they may ask for a power of attorney or the recipient's presence. For small packages, registered letters, and parcels, the issuance procedure differs, so immediately specify the type of shipment if you know it.
If the package was sent by another person
The shortest way is to write to the sender. They are more likely to quickly find the code because a receipt is issued upon sending. Even if the paper was thrown away, the data may remain in the bank transaction, personal account, or postal application.
Ask them to send:
-
a photo of the receipt;
-
the date and city of sending;
-
the address of the post office where the shipment was accepted;
-
the full name and address of the recipient;
-
the approximate weight and type of package;
-
the phone number provided during registration.
If it’s a seller, don’t just write “where is the order?”. It’s better to be specific: “Please send the postal tracking number or a photo of the shipping receipt.” This way, you will immediately understand whether the box was actually handed over for delivery or if the order was only prepared for transfer.
How to check a package through the post office
If the number was not found, go to the post office by the delivery index. Not just any nearby one, but specifically the one where the package should arrive. Once there, say that the tracking number is lost, but you need to check the receipt in your name.
Prepare:
-
your passport;
-
the full delivery address;
-
the index;
-
the full name of the recipient;
-
the approximate date of sending;
-
the city of the sender;
-
the type of shipment, if known.
If the operator sees nothing, don’t rush to consider the package lost. It may still be going through sorting, stuck between nodes, sent to a neighboring post office due to an index error, or not yet scanned for issuance. Meanwhile, continue to search for the receipt and tracking number from the sender.

Which search methods work best
| Method | When it helps | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Receipt search | You sent the package yourself | Receipt or electronic receipt |
| Request from the sender | The box was handed over by another person | Order number, purchase date, correspondence |
| Check in the app | The phone is linked to the shipment | Access to the account and phone number |
| Visit to the post office | The delivery time is approaching or has passed | Passport, address, index, full name |
| Contacting support | There is an order, but no postal code | Payment screenshot, date, seller's details |
The main difference is simple: without a tracking number, you are not looking at the route, but recovering data. Once the number is found, regular tracking works normally again.
What won’t help
Don’t waste time on websites that promise to find any package by name, phone, or bank card. At best, they will ask for the tracking number after a pretty form. At worst — they will collect personal data.
Such options work poorly:
-
entering full names into random package search engines;
-
trying to guess the tracking number manually;
-
calling other post offices without an address and index;
-
searching by card number;
-
checking by one phone number without linking to the postal service.
The working route is shorter: receipt, sender, order cabinet, app, post office by index. If the tracking number is lost, first recover the number. If that doesn’t work — check the receipt at the post office with your passport. It is almost impossible to see the full path without a code, but it is often possible to find a package that has already arrived or to retrieve the tracking number.
